Sustainable development
Sustainable development and environmental aspects must be taken into consideration with regard to all EU policies, including the preparation and implementation of projects supported by Structural Funds. Climate change poses a major new environmental challenge.
Projects aiming at developing and implementing better environmental technology, promoting energy saving and the use of renewable energy sources, improving the environmental expertise of businesses, and improving the quality of the natural and cultural environments are recommended with regard to environmental and climate policy.
The EU grants funding for Finnish environmental projects via two Structural Funds: The European Regional Development Fund and the European Social Fund.
The European Regional Development Fund provides funding through five regional programmes in Southern, Eastern, Western and Northern Finland, as well as Åland. These programmes are predicated on the regions’ development needs. They cover the determination of the strategy, procedures by line of activity, funding and indicators for outcomes.
The European Regional Development Fund funds the following, among others:
• Development and implementation of environmentally-friendly products and production methods in small and medium-sized businesses.
• Investments in environmental protection.
• Actions related to risk management.
• Actions related to curbing and adapting to climate change.
• Business-based rehabilitation projects for the natural and cultural environments.
• Improving the prerequisites for environmental and cultural tourism.
• Promoting the use of renewable energy sources.
• Sustainable use of environmental resources.
Funding by the European Social Fund is divided into nationwide and regional segments. The Social Fund is used to support the following, among others:
• Environmental training corresponding to work-life needs.
• Development of environmental expertise and networking.
• Social innovations, such as new types of employment and practices.
Supported activities are detailed in programme-specific brochures and programme-related documents.
Businesses, educational institutions, research institutions, municipalities, subregions, registered associations and other legally competent societies and their combinations can seek EU funding for their projects.
