Career coaching as part of the services of One-Stop Guidance Center

Career coaching as part of the services of the One-Stop Guidance Center clarifies young people's occupational and career choices and the needs to develop their skills and knowledge. It also improves their working life skills. The career coaching model was built in cooperation with the Ohjaamo 2.0 project, Riveria, the Employment and Economic Development Office (TE Office), the Honkalampi Foundation's KASKI Työvalmennus and the ELY Centre for North Karelia.

Implementation of the good practice

Career coaching is tailored and structured into an entity that meets the needs of the person coached. The service combines interactive group coaching and person-specific individual coaching as pair work. The small size of the group lowers the threshold for participation for the young person. The coaching is scheduled to take place on one or two days a week. Short coaching periods work best regarding the young person's coping. The coaching sessions are held near the young person's living environment.

Other network actors are also part of the coaching service and network meetings to discuss the young person's issues are organised as necessary. The different parties in the coaching service cooperate to direct the young person to the next services, enabling the client process to continue seamlessly.

Other services, such as work try-outs, training trials or rehabilitative work activities, can be used alongside the coaching. The coaching element is also integrated into these other services and the coach follows the young person throughout the services. This provides additional value to the client and helps in making further plans.

Results

  • Career coaching successfully supports the young person's progress because it is not separate from the other services provided to the young person. What is essential is the cooperation between the experts and the exchange of information during the entire service
  • Shared meeting times that enable the smooth transfer of information and make it possible to agree on the division of work after the end of the service were developed to support the cooperation
  • Many young people find social situations challenging. The group coaching given alongside individual guidance provided help and support in dealing with this challenge.

How to take advantage of the good practice

Career coaching is a good way to support the client process also in the TE Office.
