New growth ideas with company growth booster

Yrityksen Kasvubuustaaja ('Company growth booster') was a labour market training course that supported the business activities of growth companies. Its aim was to train experts who were essential in terms of the companies' growth and development.

The company growth booster training was related to the employment programme for growth companies. The employment programme for growth companies is one of the key projects of the Finnish Government and it included pilot trials. The county of Central Finland participated in a pilot trial.

The target group of the company growth booster training were highly educated jobseekers who were unemployed or at risk of becoming unemployed. They had to have a higher education degree or similar proven high level of expertise and the ability to act as company developers.  Eight students at a time started the training.

Implementation of the good practice

In the themes of the teaching provided in the training, attention was paid to companies' topical growth challenges. The themes were:  

  • Changes in the operating environment
  • New business opportunities
  • Productisation and service design
  • Protection and security of business
  • Alternatives in accessing the markets
  • The company's finances and profitability.

The content of the teaching consisted of thematic studies, solving development assignments of companies and events related to the topic (their planning and implementation). The teaching and learning methods were knowingly aimed at functionality and the utilisation of a genuine company environment.

The company-specific development themes related to the company growth booster training were very practical. The operation of the companies participating in the training was examined from the viewpoint of the challenges to their growth. The students – the growth boosters – tried to find a topical solution to the company's challenge. Students worked in small groups using each other's expertise and learning alongside the project. 

The learning method was a solution-based method. Students were challenged to learn and think about future work in a new way. Doing together, the culture of experimentation and a company-oriented approach were emphasised in the studying.

The practical resources in the training made smooth learning possible. Studying was not tied to time or place. A new kind of spacious training facility in the Jyväskylä city centre served as a base for the students' company projects. Studying in the evening was possible in the training.

A steering group was set up in connection with the training to monitor its implementation. The group had meetings in connection with each company-specific theme. This way, the procurer of the training could monitor the implementation and have a dialogue with the different cooperation partners.


  • Learning through experience in a concrete company environment was efficient
  • The experts and the employers found a different and creative way to encounter each other; agile and rapid solutions to the company's growth challenges became possible.

How to take advantage of the good practice

This good practice is viable when new trials and models are planned to solve a lack of competent employees in companies. The good practice is suitable as an on-the-job learning model.
