Raksa Coach – rapid employment of immigrants

Raksa Coach ('Construction coach') is a labour market training course based on a rapid training model, targeted at immigrants and native Finns with prior experience in the construction sector or interest in work tasks in the construction sector. Raksa Coach is also a training course for workplace instructors guiding multicultural work experience groups in companies.

The aim is to create a model for the integration of immigrants that is implemented in cooperation with working life. The model of rapid training was built in cooperation with construction companies, the ELY Centre for North Savo ELY, a vocational institute and the TE Office.

Implementation of the good practice 

In the beginning, construction sector companies that were willing and able to participate in the provision of rapid training in basic skills in the field of construction were sought. This training was aimed at immigrants and native Finns and would partly take place at the workplace.

The training period included an intensive period of 80 student working days. During the training, the students who had been selected for the training familiarised themselves with basic Finnish, the vocabulary of the construction sector, the Finnish culture and the Finnish working culture, working life and society. The students studied basic skills in the field of construction, learned about occupational safety and qualified for the occupational safety card and the hot work licence. After that, students with the required skills and the motivation continued to a vocational training section that lasted 200 student working days.

The vocational training period included an 80-day theory section in the field of construction and a 120-day work experience that took place partly at construction sites (2 days of theory and 3 days of work experience at construction sites per week).

Workplace instructors for the section completed at workplaces were given a training that taught them to guide individuals with an immigrant background who did not know any Finnish and had a low level of competence. The workplace instructors were also trained to provide guidance in the basics of the Finnish language and work culture and in construction tasks that were getting gradually more difficult. They were also trained to monitor and report on the students' learning.

The workplace instructor training lasted for 5 working days. The joint training of native Finns and immigrants was aimed at faster development of the immigrants' language skills, a mutual understanding of the cultures and more approving attitudes.

Results                           

  • Many immigrants found employment in the construction sector or applied for a place to study the field
  • The good practice helped to respond to recruitment problems in the construction sector                                     
  • The attitudes of companies in the construction sector towards immigrants improved
  • The construction sector received more qualified workplace instructors.
