Taking into account individuality
The target groups of the Työkykyä ja hyvinvointia luonnosta project ('Work ability and wellbeing from nature') are people who are unemployed or at risk of becoming unemployed and people at risk of marginalisation. In this good practice we have focused on paying attention to clients as individuals.
Implementation of the good practice
This good practice is based on two things: 1) we treat people as individuals, not as a faceless mass and 2) we take advantage of nature and its empowering effect.
In the good practice, we organised different nature-related activities to people who were unemployed or at risk of becoming unemployed and people who were are risk of marginalisation. An alternative was always organised for all activities so that clients could choose what they preferred to do. For example, it was possible to choose working in the kitchen instead of walking in nature. We took into account clients' impairments, for example, by arranging an alternative easier route when walking in nature.
When clients find activities that they like, they are more successful in finding their strengths. On the other hand, we also encouraged them to leave their comfort zone. This way we got valuable information on what clients were capable of doing. In this good practice we emphasised clients' strengths.
- Clients managed to identify their strengths.
- The experts working with the clients were able to form an understanding of the clients' strengths.
- Clients' self-esteem improved.
How to take advantage of the good practice
This good practice does not require any money, only the right kind of attitude. It is important that we do not just list the client's deficiencies, weaknesses or illnesses.
