Real-time online training for immigrants

Real-time online training for immigrants is labour market training in which equality as well as the need to improve language skills are paid attention to. The real-time training that takes place online takes into account the cultural differences between people of immigrant backgrounds and the accessibility problems caused by long distances. 

The aim of the real-time studying online is that students' language proficiency improves while they gain the abilities required in the Finnish labour market or develop their vocational competence.

Implementation of the good practice 

We planned and implemented two different online training programmes for immigrants:
1) An occupation for immigrants and 2) Employment or entrepreneurship for highly educated immigrants.

The aim of the Occupation for immigrants training was to familiarise the students with the occupations in the logistics sector, the healthcare and social welfare sector or customer services and sales in Finland.  The aim was also to improve their proficiency in Finnish in their vocational field so that they had better opportunities to find employment or continue studying in vocational education or training.

The target group of the Employment or entrepreneurship for highly educated immigrants training were highly educated immigrants who were unemployed or at risk of becoming unemployed, who had reached basic language proficiency (level A2) and who were motivated to find employment or set up a business in the field of natural sciences, technology or education in Finland.

The following topics were included in the training provided:

  • Today's working life in Finland (the forms of work, working culture, ways to apply for work)
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Familiarising with one's own vocational/professional field
  • Extending the command of specialist vocabulary of one's own vocational field
  • Familiarisation with different working environments (occupational safety)
  • Communication in the work community (operating practices and interaction skills)
  • Further education opportunities and
  • Productisation of one's own skills and knowledge.

The training was implemented as 60-day training programmes and students studied at home on their own computers through an Adobe Connect connection. Students studied in small groups based on their vocational fields. The training programmes consisted of only 12 contact teaching days, (orientation 5 days, group meetings 2 days and the final stage 5 days). Interim assessments, study guidance, individual discussions and language skills assessments were conducted during the contact teaching days. The training also included a three-month tutoring service after the end of the training programme (4 hours per student). The tutoring service included guidance in matters related to education and training, entrepreneurship or applying for a job.


  • A diverse online training network was created
  • This good practice helped to respond to the problems immigrants faced in finding employment.                                     

How to take advantage of the good practice

The model can be copied to different fields and for different needs.

The model is a solution to training courses in sparsely populated areas.
